Come hear The Music of Shakespeare: A Recital of Music Associated with Shakespeare’s Plays at First Presbyterian Church on Thursday, February 12th @ 7:30pm. Organist Joe Musser will perform in the FPC Sanctuary as one of the year’s Shakespeare Club programs. This is a free recital and everyone is cordially invited to attend.
Joe will play songs and pieces mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays on instruments similar to those that might have been heard in Shakespeare’s time – the organ, the recorder, and the harpsichord – providing context for each piece. He will also play a few pieces written long after Shakespeare’s time as incidental music for one of the plays, or as a setting for a song mentioned or quoted in a play. There have been “more than 270 operas and a little over 100 operettas and musicals based on Shakespeare’s plays” (Grove Online). Some of that incidental music was written for piano, an instrument that did not exist in Shakespeare’s day.
About the Delaware Shakespeare Club: “Meeting since January 1st, 1878, The Delaware Shakespeare Club of Delaware, Ohio, is North America’s oldest Shakespeare Club still in existence” (Club’s Facebook page).
We are wheelchair accessible at the back door entrance (off of N. Washington St.) with elevator accessibility to the Sanctuary. Questions about your visit? Call or email the FPC office:
